Wonderland by Night

No motorized traffic is allowed in the old town from 8:30 am - 11:00 am and then from 3:00 pm - 9:30 pm.  Pedestrian traffic increases at these times. It wasn't as "sardiney" as Khao San Road in Bangkok, and one didn't have to keep eyes and ears out for scooters who just push through the crowds at other times. Parking prices increase as well - my usual 3 000D spot increases to 50 000D at those hours. Both the old town and the night market become a riot of colour in the evenings.

I met two new fellow travellers yesterday. Ha lives next door to me. She is Vietnamese and teaches at the International School here. Originally from HCMC, she worked in Australia for 8 years before moving to Hoi An. Her two week Tet holiday ended and she had spent it with family. She speaks really precise English and her Aussie/Viet accent is a joy to hear. She offered any assistance I need to navigate life here.

I had my first western meal at lunch yesterday at the Dingo Deli - a Canadian Burger which is a smashed Australian beef burger with cheese, really crisp bacon, and a great maple glaze, accompanied by potato salad. Vietnamese food has a somewhat limited spectrum in variety and spice usage compared to Thai and Cambodian cuisine. It was a welcome change from the usual rice dishes. And good news Pam Milroy, there are GF options at the Deli. So you and Pete can come and visit!

As I was waiting for my order, I noticed a gentleman chatting up the customers. When he approached me I asked if he was the dingo in the deli. And yes Gordon is. We chatted for 10 minutes. He was born in the Cabbagetown area of Toronto (ergo, the Canadian burger on the menu), lived in Australis for 18 years before moving here 15 years ago. Two years ago he married a lovely Viet lady. He also offered any assistance in settling in.

This afternoon I do a 6 hour cycle in the countryside around Hoi An. And luckily, the rain just stopped and it should be dry the rest of the day 👍. Happy Valentine's Day to all in a few hours. Already happening here.
