The Wonder of this Culture


A number of hurdles have been jumped and I can do some blogging again and explore the culture. As my unit is about 4 km from the city downtown and another 1 from the old Unesco Town, I have been challenged to find where the products and services I need are located. Plus the Esim phone card I downloaded was a fraud so I was being charged roaming fees by Rogers. 

Plus although the blog features on my laptop work fine, apparently they don't for readers. So for a $25.00 fee you can have full access. Just kidding! PSYCH! The settings for comments are public access, but maybe that's not the case. And videos should work, but we might have to go with pictures. 

One reason I came here for an extended time was to kind of shake off the lethargy that I was feeling after leaving Indigo. I was too complacent and needed a boot in the butt to shake things up and be challenged. And I certainly have. 

My home here is lovely and brand new. I grabbed a Grab on Sunday and arrived with my backpack and undersea bag (I don't do checked bags on flights) and the property manager was delayed bringing the key. A nearby family saw me standing waiting and invited me to dine with them. They spoke not one word of English but were very friendly. The head of the family offered me a libation that looked like spent rocket fuel. I politely declined shaking my head and said, "I can't. I'm a Mormon." In some cosmic way, he understood and didn't press the issue. 😅

Property manager Cherry arrived and into the unit we went. I am the first tenent and it's a sweet spot. There's a large courtyard with a locked gate where my rented bicycle is safe. A pomelo tree and various plants are great greenery. 


The kitchen/sitting area is perfect for 1 or 2 people. That's a washing machine beside the fridge. the stove on the left of the sink is a countertop flat two burner with touch controls. The unit beside the tv is a 4 water filter system so I can drink from the tap on top 





 The bed is very comfy. 



I love how the bathrooms here are designed. I flip on the hot water switch 5 minutes before showering and off when I'm done. There are ac units - one in the bedroom and one in the kitchen. I haven't had to use them yet as the temps are quite comfortable. 👍 



I talked to a young lady watering the plants on my courtyard just now. Apparently, she cleans the place every Friday afternoon which is included in the monthly price of $456.00 Canadian dollars, plus hydro and wifi. Bonus! In Viet money that is 8 000 000 dong as $1 Canadian equals 17 514 D. 

Next post I'll outline some of the challenges I faced which sure made my butt sore, but my character stronger!

Odds n' Ends

This will be my second last post. My last one, which will be reflections of this experience, I will write and post after returning home to JP. I suspect a little geographical and time distance will allow for deeper reflection and insight. Perhaps that is why many authors (especially Irish writers, which is my heritage) wrote their best pieces from abroad, away from their home country. And yes I realize JP is my home country, but Hoi An has been an amazing home this last while.  Great Signage   Mark who lives above me has a wine bar. the porch is open air and it's lovely to sit enjoying a glass overlooking the river across the street.  My area of Hoi An is rather rural. The coffee houses are oases of Zen-like serenity.  And of course the beer.. Mostly lager here, but some craft beers would make Willibalds and Fairweather proud. This is 7 Bridges Taproom's line-up.  No technology, just bamboo, dried reed, a machete, nylon string and hands to make beach umbrellas....

Reflections

 Education consists mainly in what  we have unlearned. ~ Mark Twain  It's been 3 days of trying to find my circadian rhythm. 26 hours of planes and waiting in airports and travelling through 12 time zones wears on a body and mind. Took me 10 days to sleep through the night upon my return last year. The rule of thumb is that it takes one day for each time zone travelled through to return to normal. So I hope this post makes sense. And after a treasure trove of new experiences and new connections will it be possible for me to return to "normal"?  My favourite experiences: The Viet Cong Tunnel Tour, the Lunar New Year's Night, the coffee culture seminar and the daily coffee houses' visits, descending into Marble Mountain Buddhist hell and then climbing to Nirvana, the digital/travelling nomad culture discovered in pubs like Seven Bridges, Heart of Darkness and Pasteur Street, scooting through the chaotic ballets of the street rodeos, and most of all the people I me...

From the Sublime to the Ridiculous ... or vice-versa, Depending on your POV I beached it the last two days. There are three beaches here, Cua Dai, An Bang and the Hidden Beach, although they are on the same long stretch of ocean running up to Da Nang.  Cua Dai is for tourists who stay at hotels and villas that front the water. The crowd seems to be more mature, wealthy and happy to lie on the wooden loungers. a lot of German and French spoken. The hotels have large patio roofed restaurants, all advertising fresh seafood and set up rather formally.  An Bang draws a younger family-oriented crew. It is very crowded. There are cottages and two story condo units and the top of the beach is lined with tiki bars.  Hidden beach has only abandoned and partially constructed holiday units (and an unfinished Temple) and no restaurants near the beach. It is not at all crowded. Dave from Niagara Falls and his wife choose to winter here instead of Florida as they did until 4 years ago. ...
