La Silk Riverside


My first three nights are at La silk Riverside Hotel and Spa, a boutiquey gem of a place on the Tu Bon River. Everyone is treated like royalty, so much so that I have been practising the King Charles' wave while trying to hold in not my stomach, but rather my ears. My apologies to any royalists! 😉




My room is small but homey. The balcony is a great place to sit and read. 



The hotel offers a pool (one can order a floating meal), a gym, and a spa. The gym has 2 treadmills which I find ironic as Hoi An is built for pedestrians. I eat twice a day because breakfast is so filling. I am the only person who breakfasts on the patio as others told me it is too cold. And 3 nights cost me a total of $142 Canadian!!!

      1966: Alone in the car, I was driving along Water Street in Galt and stopped at a red light. Happy Lunar New Year! I spent last evening on the main river with thousands of others to ring in the New Year - the year of the snake according to the Asian zodiac. Any child born this year will be a snake. My 1949 birth year makes me an Ox - and you can stop laughing right now Ted! The Vietnamese have been prepping for weeks, sprucing up properties, buildings, even washing their scooters. The new year here is a time to remember bygone family and friends, the joys of the past year, to forget the sorrows and to heal rifts with family and friends and start those relationships anew. The kumquat tree is one symbol of renewal. As we have Christmas tree farms, they have Kumquat tree farms. This strain of fruit is not edible for humans.  People put out shrines and no offering is too small or common.  The waterfront was a riot of lanterns, lights, music, boats and people.
